Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wings in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with fearful trill
of the things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom

"I know Why the Caged Bird Sings" Maya Angelou

I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
When his wing is bruised and his
bosom sore,
When he beats his bars and would be free;
It is not a carol
of joy or glee,
But a prayer that he sends from his heart's deep core,
But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings -
I know why the caged bird
sings.

"Sympathy"(Stanza 3)" by Paul Laurence Dunbar

I am most gratefull that through much lurking, Mountain Girl has introduced me to Maya Angelou. And now, perhaps other folks would like the same introduction to both Maya, and Paul Laurence Dunbar........... I like these poems a lot.

Hi,
Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm glad you liked the poem--I've always liked Sam Walter Foss' work, and this is one of my favorites. Come back again!

Tat made me cry ~ I've been a caged bird & I couldn't even sing. Now I'm free & can sing & dance.
I rewrote a Gypsy Origin Myth that uses birds & shows how we are still caged by greed, whereas in the Before Time we were totally free to ride the wind. This may sound crazy, but even now still can I feel the wings on my back, but they won't unfurl to let me soar...
If you'd like to read this (it's about 1800 words long), please email me at killimengri@gmail.com & I'll email it back

Hello duckie, my love. I love Maya too. She's a great writer and thinker. We need more women like her. I was pleased to see her in a DVD movie I watched last week - How to make an American Quilt.
